The Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of indie publisher Devolver Digital recently shared their enthusiasm for Nintendo’s next console and the potential of developing games for the new hardware. After years of speculation about a follow-up to the highly successful Nintendo Switch, gamers finally received confirmation that a new Nintendo console is on the horizon. A few months ago, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the mystery console would be unveiled before the end of the current fiscal year.

This means fans can expect to see the new Nintendo console by March 31, 2025, though no exact date for the reveal has been provided yet. Earlier rumors suggested a September unveiling for the Switch successor, but that did not materialize. More recently, a leaker claimed that Nintendo is still aiming to showcase its next console by the end of 2024, potentially as early as later this month.

In the meantime, Devolver Digital COO Graeme Struthers spoke with Gamereactor (as translated by Nintendo Everything) during a preview event for the indie game Neva. Struthers praised the Nintendo Switch for being particularly “indie-friendly” compared to other systems, and expressed excitement for what Nintendo’s upcoming main console will bring. He also mentioned hopes for seeing more Devolver Digital-published titles on the future hardware, but emphasized that everyone will have to wait and see.

Although Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its next system, at least one game is already in development for it. Indie studio Pathea Games is working on My Time at Evershine, a life-simulation game confirmed for the tentative Switch 2. The game, which recently surpassed its Kickstarter funding goals, has gained attention as one of the first titles actively developed for the next Nintendo console.

There have also been numerous leaks and rumors regarding the Switch 2’s design and technical specs, with some mock-up images suggesting a similar console/handheld hybrid design to the current Switch. A demo of the next-gen console was reportedly shown to select developers at Gamescom 2023, and certain third-party companies are said to have already received development kits. For now, Devolver Digital’s excitement about the Switch 2 may serve as a promising hint of what’s to come as fans eagerly await the official reveal of Nintendo’s newest gaming system.
