New data from credible sources indicates that Grand Theft Auto Online's recently introduced Ludendorff Cemetery Survival game mode has been wildly popular with players. The new zombie survival mode has attracted hundreds of thousands of players, a response that isn’t surprising considering fans have long awaited a return to North Yankton, the snowy opening area of Grand Theft Auto V's story mode.

Aside from the initial sequence, North Yankton only appears one other time in GTA V during the "Bury the Hatchet" mission, where Michael follows Trevor to the Ludendorff Cemetery before being ambushed by Triads. Many fans were left wanting more access to this intriguing location, but the game didn’t provide legitimate ways to explore it further. Some players found glitches to access North Yankton in GTA Online, but these methods were inconsistent.

Rockstar’s announcement of the Halloween-themed Ludendorff Cemetery Survival mode naturally generated excitement. The mode launched on October 10, and according to recent data from GTAO Stats, over 400,000 players tried the new mode within the first 24 hours. Just three days later, that number surged past 1.3 million, making Ludendorff Cemetery Survival one of the most popular modes in GTA Online history.

Key stats:

  • 400,000 players within the first 24 hours
  • 1.3 million players after just four days
  • 270% more players compared to Assault on ATT-16
Renowned Rockstar Games insider Tez2 shared more context on the mode's success, noting that its debut attracted 270% more players than the previous mode, Assault on ATT-16. That mode’s launch was marred by Rockstar’s removal of content from GTA Online, which frustrated players and detracted from its release.

Regardless, it’s clear that GTA Online players are thrilled with the zombie-slaying action in North Yankton. Interestingly, Ludendorff Cemetery Survival is also evoking memories of Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare expansion. For PC players, there’s more good news—Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare are finally coming to PC on Halloween, October 31.
