Recover Compressed NTFS, from USB

Hello,

I have a laptop that I need to recover some files that were deleted for a friend, The laptop had Windows 10 Pro, and used NTFS. I booted from a Kali Live USB and can see the deleted files with ntfsundelete and a few other tools (testdisk, r-explorer) but none of them seem to be able to recover compressed files successfuly.

I was thinking of popping the drive out and connecting it with a USB to SATA adapter to run some windows utils on it -- but before I go that route wanted to see if anyone knew of a Linux utility or WinPE utility that can recover ntfs compressed files successfuly ?

First off, does the laptop have a HDD or an SSD? This is a critically important question although even most computer/IT guys wouldn't think it to be.
