Seagate terminal access -- timing of read channel shorting

I have a Grenada (ST2000DM001 9YN) with a media cache problem and I'm finding it impossible to get F3 T>, no matter when I short the read channel. I've tried shorting immediately before "(P) SATA Reset" and immediately after that, but no joy in either case. Tried holding the short for 5 - 10 seconds, and also for 5 - 10 minutes; also tried just waiting about an hour after that and still no command prompt. I did manage to get a command prompt once, shorting even earlier in the boot process but couldn't get it back after releasing the short.

I suspect head contamination but am holding off on opening the drive in case the customer wants another opinion. (I don't have a compatible donor whereas larger shops might.)

Any suggestions? Here's the terminal log (most empty lines removed)...

Does the drive immediately get stuck busy when powered on, or does it come ready until you attempt reading ID?

I might be able to work a trick that doesn't require any read channel shorting.

[post]9725[/post] You might try disabling all but head 0.
Thanks for the reminder, Sam. I'll try that.

EDIT: Tried that and after 11x “FAIL Servo Op=0100 Resp=0003” the drive came ready. However, as soon as I try to calibrate ("Get Details" on DFL-SRP), it goes busy but retains DRD and DSC status. Hard reset clears Busy but it returns as soon as I try to calibrate.

Next, I disabled all but head 1 and drive never comes ready. It clicks 4 times, makes a flutter sound, and repeats this indefinitely. COM output is: Bad CRC Seg:0x05, Bad CRC Seg:0x22, followed by repeating LED:000000BB FAddr:00004A18.

In neither case do I get any of the normal boot process messages; shorting the read channel and issuing Ctrl+z during the above does nothing. It looks more like heads and/or media failure rather than media cache only. Because I don't have a compatible donor and the high cost of buying one ($315 CAD), I've suggested the client take it to another lab that is more likely to have one and is more experience dealing with these DM drives. I didn't open the drive to verify the contamination suspicion, so as not to prejudice the case.

Sir PC 3000 Has 2 Mods That Mod The Rom So That You Can Short Read Channel And Get over with the case ,It did not work the only one time i tried on a seagate though

Okay, thanks Amarbir. Is there an article in their Blog or some other reference that discusses this? It would be good to know just what they are modifying.
