Motivated Recovery Noob Wanting to Recover Data

Hey everybody,

new to the forum and just as desperate as motivated to get my data back. I know the introduction thread is somewhere else but I want to get straight to it so please don't mind me introducing myself and my problem "real quick".

Im a 22 year old German that built his own PC 7 years ago. Since my other hardware doesnt really matter here unless SSDs and HDDs I used to run my OS on a Samsung 830 128GB and upgraded to a 850 500GB a year ago. The 830 is now for storage. Back then in 2012, I also had a 2TB ST2000DM001 for storage. This is probably the wrong place to admit that I never thought of being a victim of hardware failure so I never made a backup of my HDD. Stupid me.

Everything was working fine until a few days ago where I had to hard-reset my PC. After the hard reset the PC couldnt detect my HDD anymore. Neither BIOS, nor the "diskpart" prompt, nor the disk management, nor the diagnosis tool provided by Seagate. I tried a different SATA cable, a different mainboard SATA port, put the HDD in a different PC, asked around in German forums but nothing has helped me yet. The HDD definitely spins up and procudes the normal amount of heat. No unusual noises either.
I dont know how high prices for data recovery are around the world but in Germany it can easily go up to $1k-$2k. That definitely wouldnt be worth it. But Im willing to do it myself and I would say Im not that much of a noob.

After looking into this entire topic and into this forum I know a need a couple of things before Im set to start. So my questions are:
What USB to TLL adapter can you guys recommend for my ST2000DM001?
What Recovery Tool and what Recovery Software can you recommend and what are the price ranges? Obviously I would like to stay as low on budget as possible, since this will hopefully be the only time I ever have to recover my data.

While im waiting on (hopefully) good responses I'll be watching and reading tutorials on how to get into data recovering.

Thank you
Adrian

Any TTL adapter is fine, but it's not going to help. You need more than just a TTL adapter to disable the media cache and bad sector reallocation functions of this drive to get it working.

We charge a flat $450 for most cases of ST2000DM001 drives that are stuck busy like that, just FYI. That is, so long as the heads haven't failed, which if they had it'd usually be clicking and would spin down after a minute.

This issue is extremely common with this model. The 3Tb version of that drive had such a high rate of this sort of failure that they lost a class-action lawsuit.

And I'm sure even If I'm motivated enough to do it myself that the cost of the software, the adapter and especially the recovery tool (which is probably for frequent professional use) is going to go way beyond $500, right?

By spinning down, do you mean completely stop spinning or just spin slower than it should be spinning? If so, it seems as If I have a special case and since you're pretty experienced in HDD recovery, especially my model, is there any other solution you might be able to suggest such as trying to figure out whats wrong with my Harddrive instead of giving it some professional that is gonna charge me a sh*t ton of money? And if there is no other way around it, do you happen to know someone in Germany that delivers good quality work instead of ripping people off?

Wow that's crazy. Sounds like I was extremely lucky on that purchase....

If the problem is Media Cache, I can do it for you much lower than 500€, but you have to send it to Portugal...

Try adding another zero to that value, and then add some more.

[post]14840[/post] completely stop spinning

If the heads are bad, it'll typically click quietly several times trying to initialize then it'll completely spin down the motor. If the motor stays spinning, then you've got the typical media cache and/or bad sector pending reallocation bug.

Basically it's a firmware glitch that causes these drives to get stuck busy at the first hint of bad sectors. So it will spring up without warning, typically after it's powered off/on again.
