Motor killing the heads it's not very common. Heads are not attached to the motor. Maybe if the motor is damaging the PCB, wich will also damage heads, but thats seems very unlikely

Probably you have media damage. Have you checked heads under microscope?

The time it will take you to repair it, a new pcb would be a lot faster only with ROM swap. And you could keep it running fine again.

Could you do a full firmware backup? No heads failed?
