The head change it's not that simple as a PCB swap. You will need better and proper tools to do it. I don't advise you to do it....

I'm in Portugal if you need. If you swap PCB withouth ROM swap, usually nothing else happens. Or it works or not.

What happened to the drive originally? Bad power supply? Probably also a bad preamp.... I have a case here with a 4TB ST drive with same symptoms. Still waiting for confirmation from the client to see if he accepts the price to solve it.

Hi We should also start a STICKY for this on each brand. Here's one case I made this week. Nothing compatible bout them but it work fine. Patient had 2 heads and donor 3 heads.

Some tools that work on a brand can be compatible with other brand. Just test before to see if they fit or not.

If the problem is only with the PCB, you only need to match the PCB version number and swap the ROM chip. This will not be a very expensive process (if only PCB is dead). Where are you located?

I still have another advice: If you are intending to enter the Data Recovery business, store your HDD, buy the tools and after a few years of experience go back to your drive. You will see that what you are planning now it's not a good idea.

You don't have files inside them. Those are the "result log" of a scan software (maybe UFS, I don't remember now) and they are used to resume a previous scan of a drive. You will not get any files from it.

Hi Guys I have this ST here that had a bad PCB (a wrong power supply was connected and burned the PCB). I ordered a new PCB, swapped ROM (since I couldn't read it from the original PCB), soldered it on the new PCB and it doesn't even spin up.... I can read the ROM by boot code (so ROM is OK)...

Could it be that when it was dropped there was some kind of electric problem? Over the USB cable or power supply....

Hi First you should clone the HDD to a new one. You have a topic here about HDDSuperclone that can do the job for you. After the clone, if you still cannot access the data directly, you can use a software to do a search (like Rstudio for instance...).

I don't know if Knoppix have that option, but other distros have: why don't you use a LIVE DVD to boot? It has all the configurations done for boot and work from the DVD.

You need to know how a Seagate drive works. To be fast, they have rom on pcb (which is unique for your drive) and also firmware modules on platters so they need both to be in good condition. It's more important to start by the terminal log, because with that log we can know what's going on with...

I think that your first move should be to get the terminal log, even before you swap PCB.

Tried the latest version on Kubuntu 16.04 64bits with the command hddsuperclone --gui or sudo hddsuperclone --gui or even just hddsuperclone and doesn't start. Deb file installed fine...

Connect only PCB, and block SA access.

Try to start it in Kernel mode, load a loader and check SA for bad modules. Maybe even one bad head, can make that symptom.

I have found that in some cases heads get really stuck and I'm afraid that doing the spinning of the platter might damage heads and media as well (it happened to me before).

Today I used the tool for Hitachi 2,5" to unstuck heads. Worked flawlessly.

I have made a test on a drive that was formated and I needed to do a RAW recovery. R-studio gave me the results that I needed. Restorer didn't gave me the RAW results. It only showed the partition finding results.

Several menus are exactly the same.... The registration menu, the menu of type of partition...

Maybe the upgrade/update failed because the drive have problems. Imagine that the the update files couldn't be written into the HDD. That would cause the system to crash.

1ºst: usually CCTV drives have specific partition format, so you cannot "see" it on windows. 2º You need proper software to deal with CCTV cases (if I'm not mistaken). 3: if you can, you should image the drive (if you can) and put it back on the CCTV system, to see if it gets detected and working.

If you have a bad PCB, you just need to write the patient ROM into the Donor PCB (you can use the Boot ROM option to write it), connect to HDA and you will ID the drive well. The SA modules are not written on the PCB, they are on platters.

Yes, Jol, HDDSurgery are mmade of metal, but as ER-tools says, the problem is "metal tools which are not fixed on actuator's axis will scratch the platters". HDD Surgery tools are fixed (at least the ones I know of...)
