I must tell you my experience. Once I needed to clean a fingerprint from a platter. I tried several solutions: Acetone, IPA, etc. always with a cleanroom wipe. The best result was when I cleaned the platter only with the cleanroom without any fluid. Try it on a test drive first.

SSD fail like any others (mechanic). Not the same issues, but they fail. As always, backups are always needed. What we get with SSD is the speed they provide. Nothing else.

Yeah true, but with 3% left the probability of corruption is low. Usually you don't have a HDD 100% full right? But sometimes, it's a Murphy's Law: on that 3% left, you will have the most important file :mrgreen:

A 97% recovery I would call it successful. Sometimes we get less percentage....

I once had a HDD with a fingerprint on it and I had to clean it first. So I tried on a donor, several things: IPA 99%, acetone... The way I cleaned it without a problem it was with a dry cleanroom wipe. Gently it removed the fingerprint.

OK, so I'm back to this case. My USB PCB is a G003296A and the SATA is a G003138A (removed from a 500GB HDD). Marvell chip and motor chip, both matched. I did the ROM swap (IC606 from USB) to SATA (IC602), but now it doesn't even power or spin... Could I have damaged the ROM??

I don't think there are good or bad controllers. You should get the one you need compatible with your drive and that is working. Maybe the one you get isn't compatible or have a malfunction.

I wonder why/how you get to the step of testing such a different models. What makes you go that way?

Hi Well, if really a DR lab is too much, you can try the DIY. Only the swap of PCB isn't enough. You can try to swap ROM, but it's almost a head problem (could also be a platter damage). Why don't you take it to a lab that doesn't charge only for diagnosing it?

Well, I also thought that the only the terminal cable was needed, and I was getting terminal log. It was not configured to 32GB, because all the data was read. Another strange thing was that I could send the LE command, it "answered" and after I tried again and no more....

It was without any jumper. I added one to the pins near the IDE cable and it worked..

Altough the PC was flooded by water, the client (and myself to be honest) thought the HDD was bad too. I checked PCB, it was fine, but getting that log... After putting the jumper, I could access all data with minor bad sectors.

Hi I have a USB 1TB WD drive (don't remember the model right now) which seemed a case of stuck heads. After I opened it, heads are fine and the problem is when I try to rotate the platters. They can do a 50% rotation, and the rest seems very stuck. After those 50%, they are free again. I hope...

You are using the right software. The problem is the damage you already have on the disk. No software will help on that.

First, you should Image the drive to a good drive. After that, you can try to recover with software, Like R-Studio, etc, on the donor drive.

It seems that the problem appeared after a FW upgrade of the Iomega box.... Maybe it corrupted the data. Need to investigate more.

Do you have to image the whole drive? Maybe if you just get the files you need, using DE, you can get the data without messing with the HDD.

We need to replace the spindle when it's really stuck (like some Seagate). I think it's easier to replace the spindle (with the right tool) than swap platters.

Got the case closed. The PCB was really not the original one. I got the Original PCB with ROM chip already unsoldered eheehe I read it on the programmer, wrote it on a Sata PCB, solved a few fw modules that were bad (and thanks to hddguy who gave some help here) and got all the data.
